The Importance Of DMOZ

Many people question the importance of DMOZ. Lets go back a few years. Google used to hold DMOZ with great esteem, they used to collect the database on a regular basis and sites that were DMOZ listed generally achieved a better SERP’s placement (Search Engine Results Page).

Is it any different now? Well now Google only visit DMOZ once or twice a year. This is why people have become skeptical of how much it is thought of by Google. Consider this however, the Google directory is still based upon DMOZ. This is of course easily proved, if you click on the “Submit A Site” link and you will see it quite clearly points you to the DMOZ add a site page (some people believe it or not think that Google run their own directory). This suggests that yes Google do indeed hold some respect for the Open Directory that is DMOZ.

Now lets assume that Google on the other hand do not think much of DMOZ there are plenty of other search engines that do such as AOL Search and Lycos. Although the majority of your traffic does come from Google does it make any sense to ignore the others? Any business man will tell you no.

DMOZ is free to submit your site too. Why pass up the opportunity to be included in search engines for free? 1 reason people have stated that they do not submit to DMOZ is that it takes too long to get accepted. Is that a valid excuse, why does it matter so much if your site takes 6 months to appear? While you are waiting for your site to appear you can continue with other SEO tasks! If you are unhappy with the way DMOZ runs why not apply to be an editor and try to help the directory clean up and help it become as highly thought of as it once was.
