The End Is Nigh

Although it has been announced for some time a lot of people have as of yet to upgrade to PHP 5. The majority of people of course are at the complete mercy of their web host.

If your host has not upgraded yet you should of course take some preparation into ensuring that you will be prepared for when it does arrive.

So you may wonder what can I do to prepare. Well there are several things you can start by doing. Firstly ensure that you are using the most up to date versions of the software you are using. When upgrading ensure they are compatible with PHP 5.Unfortunately we are still in a state where some softwares are still not compatible with PHP 5 (you would think 3 years would be long enough wouldn’t you).

If in the event you find that the software you are using is not PHP 5 compatible I urge you to contact the vendor immediately, there is very little time before most hosts will be running PHP 5 (if your do not upgrade I strongly suggest you move A.S.A.P., come August 2008 no updates will be released for PHP 4 which means that the server will be susceptible to hacking attempts as fixes will not be released as bugs are found).

You should also ensure that you regularly backup your data from the server. Although the risk is small it is possible for your host to lose data during the upgrade (but of course you don’t need to be told to backup files because you already do that regularly right?

Are you prepared for the roll out of PHP 5 on your hosts servers?

Knowing the host on a personal level is a great boon. When I moved over to his servers I made him revamp, well, most things really. Now I have the newest versions of everything, (including PHP, although he did already have PHP5 before) - And I have to say, it’s going really smoothly.

Cheap, extremely quick, knowing them on a personal level, - 3 things that make a great host.
